It gives us great pleasure to share a message we received this week (see below) from our Chief Coordinator and Technical Director in Uganda, which confirms all school funding for the Second Term is in place and all of our sponsored children are in school!

Little Angels; a light in the darkness

It’s another muggy predawn on the equator, as children young as six trudge miles down the dusty dirt roads from their local villages and mud huts to the Central Region Ugandan municipality of Nkokonjeru.

The children make this daily trek so they can attend one of the schools in town. Even discounting the trucks and mini-buses flying by in the pitch dark, it’s still a major challenge.

 A large number of children, orphaned by HIV/AIDS, are cared for by relatives, straining family budgets past the breaking point.

Sponsor a Child and Support Special Needs Children

Sitting in the hot Ugandan sun is a girl. She is just outside the Nkokonjeru hospital, a small cluster of buildings inside a compound, broken shards of glass cemented atop the walls like barbed wire to keep unwanted visitors from scaling the walls to get inside when denied entry at the gates. People cluster in the waiting room and the guard sits idly at the gate post. The girl has a sign pinned to her back. It reads: “Enough is enough.”

How Your Relationship Grows When You Sponsor a Child

CARITAS For Children is about relationships. The relationship that sponsors form with their Ugandan children is centered around the consistent communication that CARITAS For Children provides through their ministry work. The ways that the children are able to communicate include Skype, sending their report cards through mail, sponsor visits, and the simple writing of letters. The letters are the main source of communication.

Whom You Help When You Sponsor a Child

One of the most revealing parts of working for CARITAS For Children is witnessing how children are selected for sponsorship through our Catholic charity. It is encouraging because children who are in deep need have hope of receiving assistance from a sponsor after completing this process. There is a part of me, however, that feels a bit helpless seeing the tremendous, even overwhelming, need in this region of Africa. I can’t help wondering why I was born into such different circumstances…
