Fr. Frank’s Creative Strategy to Feed Our Children

Donate to Fr. Frank's Caritas Farm

In late March, when Uganda was forced into a sudden lockdown, Fr. Frank couldn't continue to work as Dean of Studies at St. Joseph Seminary. Since all public Masses were also forbidden, he reached out to CARITAS hoping to do something significant through our Special Feeding Program.

When 24 acres of land were made available to him, and with more time on his hands, Fr. Frank decided to put it to good use by starting a farm!

Thanks to funds raised in our Special Feeding Program, Father was quickly able to purchase seeds, farming tools and supplies. CARITAS was also able to support his creative initiative by paying local laborers and several seminarians to help him work the land.

Feature Fridays: Sandra

Posted by Kyle Forbush on Feb 7, 2020 9:00:00 AM

Sandra is an 18-year-old student from Nkokonjeru, Uganda. Her father abandoned the family when Sandra was young, and her mother lacked the monetary income to support her, or pay for her schooling. In 2010, Sandra was sponsored through a CARITAS Sponsor, allowing her to attend a local Catholic Boarding School.

In Sandra's own words, "CARITAS has taught me to have zeal and love for education," and her commitment shows in her class evaluations, as she was the top student in the class.

A Communion of CARITAS: Visit Uganda

Posted by Arnold Lezcano on Jan 22, 2020 11:30:00 AM

CARITAS is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for sponsors and supporters of our Mission. Our organization is coordinating a visit to Uganda in 2020! We encourage you to join us anytime between March 15th – April 10th of this year, while we visit the sites in Uganda where CARITAS operates.

This visit will provide you the chance to share a meal with your sponsored child(ren), go to Mass, explore the surrounding attractions, and observe the local Day School and/or Boarding Schools. Through your support, letters, and pictures, you have built a sacred relationship of love with your child. Visiting them and seeing their everyday life firsthand will only further develop your cross-continental bond.

Success Story: A Boy With No Name

Posted by Arnold Lezcano on Nov 22, 2019 1:47:05 PM

We noticed this little boy off to the side of the road.

Sister Agnes asked his Grandmother,

"What's the boy's name?"

The Grandmother said,

"I don't Know."

We were shocked...so poor that he didn't even have a name!

Feature Fridays: David

Posted by Kyle Forbush on Nov 8, 2019 8:08:59 AM

Romans 12:5 says, “So we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another." In other words, the Bible is reminding us that we are never completely disconnected from one another. Those who have experienced a broken family or tragic loss can find solace in the larger, interconnected web of human beings that co-habitate the Earth. The issue with this line of thought is observed when we forget that everyone--not just those we live and eat with--are our family.

David Kato's family has indeed seen adversity. His father passed away when David and his twin sister were only but three months old. Their mother and two other siblings were left in a state of intense poverty, without even a garden with which to grow their own food, a common asset used to combat poverty-induced hunger in Uganda.

Feature Fridays: Kevin

Posted by Kyle Forbush on Oct 4, 2019 10:00:00 AM

Kevin's otherwise happy upbringing was interrupted by the sudden death of her father in 2009, when she was 10 years old. Her mother and older brother, valiant and strong, family-oriented individuals, took over the responsibility of paying for her education and supporting her general health & welfare from that point on. Kevin was able to complete Primary & Secondary-level school with exemplary remarks, and blossomed from a helpless child into an upstanding and optimistic individual.

Feature Fridays: Elvin, Everlyn & Elena

Posted by Kyle Forbush on Sep 27, 2019 8:58:00 AM

On a warm morning in late May, three siblings woke up in the village of Nkokonjeru in southern Uganda and prepared themselves for school. Elvin, being the oldest sibling at seventeen, tried to rouse their mother, but she was in a deep sleep, recovering from a terrible headache she suffered the night before. He returned to his sisters, Evelyn the middle sibling and Elena the youngest, and made sure they were ready for the day. A knock came at the door before they had time to leave, and since his mother was asleep, Elvin answered. It was their neighbor, a friend of the family, inquiring about their mother. Elvin kindly told her that their mother was still asleep, which the neighbor took to be odd. She asked to enter the home, and Elvin stood aside to let her past. To her horror, the neighbor entered the home to find the mother lying lifeless in her bed. She had passed in her sleep.

Feature Fridays: Sylvia

Posted by Kyle Forbush on Sep 13, 2019 10:55:18 AM

In order to tell Sylvia's story, one must first understand the circumstances that her single father battled while raising 12 children. His first four children were born of his first wife, whom he loved dearly. When she passed away, he was left alone in care of four young souls who he desperately wanted to be able to go to school.

Feature Fridays: Victoria Vision

Posted by Kyle Forbush on Aug 2, 2019 10:00:00 AM

This week, we are shedding the spotlight on a 14-year-old student from Nkokonjeru, Uganda named Victoria Vision who is seeking someone to support the remainder of her Secondary-level education. Having been previously sponsored through CARITAS, she was able to complete Primary School and reach the second year of Secondary School (equivalent to sophomore year of high school in the U.S.). During her first two years at Secondary School, she discovered that her favorite subject is Chemistry, and decided that she would like to become a midwife who helps poor mothers who don't have the access to a proper hospital. Unfortunately, Victoria's previous sponsor is no longer available and so she has no-one to provide support to continue her education and achieve her dream.
